It is that exciting time of year again, schools are decking the halls (students are climbing the walls!) and everyone has Nativity songs permanently stuck in their heads. So why not get into the spirit of things and earn a place on Santa’s good list this year by challenging yourself and your students to a low-water Christmas with Water Explorer?
Water Explorer combines digital learning with practical action to help us look after our precious water sources. The programme empowers children to lead action to save our precious water and get their friends, family and local communities doing the same.
Secret Water at Christmas time
As Water Explorers, we like to embrace the festivities in an eco-friendly way, and one way to do this is to understand that there is secret water, AKA embedded water in everything that we buy, wear and eat. You can find more about this by taking on the Secret Water Mission in Water Explorer, which challenges students to do things like eat water saving meals, recycle more and swap clothes and books to reduce the amount of secret water being used in their lives!
One of our teams, Monkspath Junior and Infant School from Solihull, have already got into the Christmas spirit and created lovely Christmas owl decorations out of their old school uniforms. They even sold some of the second-hand uniform that wasn’t used at their PTA coffee morning.
We have also had teams show off their entrepreneurial skills by selling their upcycled Christmas centrepieces and decorations (that were very cleverly made out of old books) at their Christmas fete. The team then kindly decided to donate the money that was raised to charity.
Save water, and plastic with your Christmas decorations
You too can join our Water Explorers and help to save secret water this Christmas by getting creative and recycling, repurposing and upcycling materials to create beautiful Christmas decorations or gifts.
One way you can do this, and reduce plastic waste at the same time, is by creating these beautiful snowflake ornaments out of old plastic bottles. You’ll be giving plastic a new life and helping to reduce the secret water used in your Christmas activities this year, it’s a win-win situation!
