CISV are a member organisation of SEEd and have been working with us over the last year to share the Sustainability Attitudes Surveys with as many young people, educators, and members of the public as possible.

How do we educate children and youth to experience, grasp, and live our global connectedness as humans and as part of the global environment on a deep emotional level? How do we enable children and youth to learn from and with their peers from around the world without generating a massive carbon trail?

CISV has successfully educated and inspired action towards a more just and peaceful world for coming up to 70 years. CISV is based on the belief that peace is possible through building global friendship and mutual understanding, starting with children. In over 50 countries, CISVers offer non-formal educational programmes for children and youth starting age 11. One of CISV’s four educational focus areas is sustainable development which means that CISV camps and community programmes will explore, through experiential learning and engagement with partner organizations, sustainability issues at the local and international scales.

Over the years, CISVers have produced many engaging educational activities helping children and youth engage with a wide range of sustainability issues including food, cities, and the international dimension of environmental challenges and solutions. The 2020 CISV sustainable development blog has featured issues such as going green in quarantine, and our efforts to understand better CISVers’ attitudes towards sustainability using the Se-Ed survey. In 2019, a group of CISV volunteers organized into a Working Group which aims at organization-wide transformation and decarbonisation of CISV. With its international orientation, CISV relies rather heavily on air travel and many CISVers are determined to reduce the organization’s carbon footprint decisively.
